How does laser hair removal work?

Laser hair removal targets the melanin, or dark pigments in the hair, which are absorbed by the hair follicle, essentially destroying the follicle so the hair can no longer grow. As hair grows at different rates multiple treatments are required to target each follicle within the right hair cycle. We're looking for hair in the anagen phase of growth, which is typically occurring in approximately 20% of follicles at one time, which is why it is important to have a series of treatments spaced 4-6 weeks apart. As everyone is unique, as is the body's response to the treatments so the number of treatments does vary, but most experience an 85-90% hair reduction with 4-8 treatments.

Prior to starting your laser hair removal treatments we will have a complimentary consultation with you where we will review the process, assess if it is the right treatment for you, and conduct a patch test. Our Dynamic Pulse Control laser has built in cooling so treatments are very comfortable. You can expect to feel a slight snapping sensation, but it is generally only mildly uncomfortable. After your treatment there may be slight redness and a tenderness similar to a sunburn feeling. We will apply a soothing gel for you, and a cold compress can be used if needed. The tender feeling usually passes quickly, normal activities can be resumed immediately, though you do need to avoid sun exposure and heat for the first 24-48 hours after your treatment

Pre care

Prior to your appointment please do not wax, thread, epilate or use other hair removal methods that alter the hair follicle for at least 4 weeks

If possible please shave the area 24 hours prior to your appointment

Do not use any lotions, creams, deodorant, perfumes, etc in the area to be treated

Wear loose fitting, comfortable clothing

Post Care

A soothing aloe gel will be applied to the area, if any redness or tenderness occurs feel free to use cold compresses to calm the skin

Avoid rubbing the area, excessive exertion, sweating, swimming, hot tubs or excessively hot showers

Frequently Asked Questions

Can laser hair removal work on blond hair?

As the laser targets the melanin in the hair blonde, white, and grey hair are not well treated due to the lack of melanin, so unfortunately this is not the best hair removal treatment. Red hair varies, as there are many ranges of pigments, so we can determine if this is right for you with a complimentary patch

Is laser hair removal safe?

Yes, it is a well proven, safe method of hair reduction, however depending on your individual health history there may be reasons to not have laser hair removal.

Those who are:

Pregnant or breastfeeding

Are taking, or have taken Accutane within the past 6 months

Taking photosensitive medications (please refer to list in link below)

Have sunburned, irritated or damaged skin in the area, or have tanned, even with sun beds or self tanner, in the past 4 weeks minimum

Have a history of cold sores/herpes in the area being treated (please speak with your physician about taking a preventative medication such as Valtrex prior to your treatment to prevent a flare up)

Those with healing disorders, autoimmune disorders, diabetes should discuss with their physician to determine if this is a safe treatment for you. We will review your health history in your consultation and can discuss individual situations further to ensure you have the most positive results

Though very uncommon, there is a risk of burns, blisters, scarring, infection, hyper/hypo pigmentation

Is hair removal permanent?

You can expect a permanent hair reduction....however, changes within your body, mostly related to hormones and medications, can reactivate dormant follicles. You may find that with hormonal changes, such as pregnancy, aging, side effects from medications, there may be regrowth that can be treated with follow up treatments. Everyone is unique and can have different responses, however the rate of hair reduction is very high
